The 96% sulfuric acid was added to the toluene in Vi hour and the reaction run up to the final reaction temperature with refluxing and constant heat input, at which time the reac-tion temperature was held constant for Vs hour by controlling the heat input.The results show that 91% conversion could be obtained at 150 C. At temperatures over 150 C. the reaction mass turned black and increasing quantities of insoluble materials were formed.
