Under optimal activation conditions an active tension-length curve with a well-defined plateau region was obtained [for Mytilus edulis adductor muscle]. The plateau can be explained in terms of a sliding filament mechanism in which double overlap of the thin filaments does not interfere with cross-bridge formation between thick and thin filaments of the appropriate polarity.
