Infections caused by the various mycobacteria have assumed an important place in pediatric infectious diseases. It is estimated that 1.3 million children in the world develop disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis every year, and the annual risk of infection with this organism is 1 to 2% in the developing world."* In the United States 1721 children developed tuberculosis in 1993, a 40% increase from the 1987 reported case numbers."
