Measurements of blowing snow transport over wind-scoured terrain in the Scottish Highlands indicate mass fluxes several orders of magnitude less than for transport over complete snow covers. A model of snow transport processes indicates that vertical transport of blowing snow out of the near-surface atmospheric boundary-layer and sublimation of blowing snow within this boundary-layer deplete the supply of snow, with important implications for downwind accumulations of snow in forested areas and topographic depressions. Aspects of blowing snow in alpine areas such as wind speed profiles and aerodynamic surface roughness are also addressed.
