In the binaural interaction of a single click and a click pair, it has been found necessary to have a minimum time interval of a few msec between the members of the pair in order to hear 2 sound images. This is often explained by invoking a neural refractory time. On the other hand, multiple‐image lateralizations with single clicks suggest neural volleys with time separations as little as 1 msec. An experiment was performed which combined the investigation of both these phenomena. Two clicks with time separations 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 msec were presented to one ear, and a single click of controllable interaural time was presented to the other. Two polarity patterns (rarefaction—rarefaction vs rarefaction, and rarefaction—condensation vs rarefaction) were used at pattern rates of 2. 10, 50/sec. Condenser microphones were used as earphones.
