Cambridge Professor of Political Economy Helen Thompson has argued that ‘20th century and early 21st century economic and political history is impenetrable without understanding what has followed from the production, consumption, and transportation of oil and gas’(Thompson, 2022, 10). Volt Rush joins a growing literature arguing that energy will continue to drive the economic and geopolitical fault lines in world order, as the push for green energy pivotally influences the politics of the 21st century’s second decade and beyond.Sanderson is a veteran journalist, with experience in New York, Beijing, and London and a focus on China and the energy transition. These interests come together in Volt Rush, which delves into the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain based on years of fieldwork and in-depth interviews with key players. Across the book’s 15 chapters, the reader is transported through Congolese cobalt mines and Chilean copper mines, to Chinese battery factories, to the largely unexplored deep sea. Sanderson weaves this journey together with narratives of commodity traders, activists, scientists, and billionaires involved in the production, transportation, and deployment of these finite raw materials.
