The synthesis and characterization of the new ligand A, A-dipyridoxylethylenediamine-A, A'-diacetic acid 5, 5'-bis (phosphate)(DPDP, for dipyridoxal diphosphate) are described. The solution equilibrium properties of DPDP and the Mn (II), Zn (II), Cu (II), and Fe (III) complexes have been determined, log KML values are 15.10, 18.95, 22.08, and 33.52 for MnDPDP6-, ZnDPDP6-, CuDPDP6-, and FeDPDP5-, respectively. Crystals of the salt CaNa2MnC22H26N4014P2, 21H20 (1) are monoclinic, space group C2/c (No. 15), with a= 24.490 (3) A, b= 14.440 (2) A, c= 30.703 (4) A, ß= 112.747 (12), and Z= 8. The asymmetric unit contains 1 MnDPDP anion, 1 calcium cation, 2 sodium cations, and 21 water molecules. The manganese (II) oxidation state was confirmed by the stoichiometry, by the Mn-Ol, Mn-08, Mn-N2, and Mn-N4 bond distances, and by magnetic susceptibility measurements. In vivo applications of MnDPDP for magnetic resonance imaging enhancement are discussed.
