CHIHLI: Peking?(ex Maximowicz). Caucasus to Japan, and widely spread in North America. We have seen no Chinese specimens that we could refer to this species (if me retain P. chinensis as distinct), which in foliage is so near some of the forms of P. chinensis as to be hardly distinguishable. Indeed we are not satisfied that the two are specifically separable; though the latter usually has much smaller and more numerous flowers than the former. Frnnchet and Saratier (op. sup. cit.) indicate differential characters in the foliage and sepals, admitting at the same time that they are of little importance.
