THE sensory cells in the vertebrate labyrinth are epithelial cells innervated by end-branches of bipolar neurons of the various first-order ganglia associated with the 8th cranial nerve. Physiologically, the response behaviour of these cells has been thoroughly analysed in the semi-circular canals and otolith organs of the labyrinth of the elasmobranch fish,Raja clavata1–3and of the frog4.
