Symptoms such as disorientation, confusion, impaired intellectual functioning, and depression were noted in 5 of 19 adult patients with acute leukemia, following treatment with an antitumor drug, levoasparaginase. This enzyme blocks protein synthesis of levoasparagine, an amino acid, in susceptible tumor cells and in certain normal cells. It is suggested that a critical level of levoasparagine may be necessary for normal functioning of brain cells, and that its depletion may result in psychological impairments.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
