METHODSSubjects. Lung volumes and the static mechanical properties of the lung were measured in 30 subjects-10 with asthma (seven males, three females), 10 with emphysema(all males), and 10 healthy subjects (all males). The diagnoses of asthma and of emphysema were based on the following criteria: the patients with asthma had episodic dyspnea and airway obstruction with complete reversibility, indicated by a normal forced expiratory volume at 1 set (FE&) within 2 years of study, and, apart from evidence of overinflation, a normal chest radiograph. All were studied during an attack of asthma. The patients with em physema had persistent dyspnea on exertion and airway obstruction, as indicated by a reduced FE&; and radiographic evidence of overinflation and of lung destruction with attenuation of intermediate and peripheral vascular markings, and cyst formation. The control subjects had a normal exercise tolerance, chest radiograph, and FE&. The patients were in the care of staff members of the Division of Thoracic Medicine, Prince Henry Hospital. Lung volumes. The functional residual capacity (FRC) was measured by prolonged nitrogen washout (15-20 min) assisted by periodic hyperventilation in the subjects with airway obstruction, and by a 7-min washout
