When Mrs. Frederick C. Little’s second son was born, everybody noticed that he was not much bigger than a mouse.(E. B. White, 1945, 1.) In every somatic and morphological detail Stuart Little was a mouse, but in every detail of personality, character, intelligence, aspiration, and judgment he exemplified a human boy verging on adolescence (Gubar 2003). Like the “human neuron mouse” about which Greely et al.(2007) so ably ruminate, Stuart was a chimera, not a hybrid, because both his parents belonged to the same species. He represents a mouse with “human-like capacities associated with human dignity” to borrow a phrase from Karpowitz et al.(2005).Greely and his colleagues “do not conclude that it would be a clearly bad act to confer such capacities on nonhumans”(2007, 27). Nonetheless “a mouse with human language capabilities or that seemed to have a human level of self-consciousness would be, at the least, troubling”(2007, 27).
