——AATA
Thirteen furnaces from around 400 B.C., excavated at Taruga, Nigeria, are described in detail and features of their construction and operation are compared with those documented in other locations. From this study it is suggested that the knowledge of iron working in Nigeria diffused from elsewhere; perhaps North Africa and in particular from Carthage. Analyses of two ore types and of the slag found at Taruga indicate that a mixture of these ores formed the furnace charge. Metallographic examination of several small iron artifacts from the site is reported, the excellent state of preservation being taken as a feature of the favourable soil and climate characteristics in this part of Nigeria.
