The first exposure of isolated bovine adrenals to lanthanum (0.5 mM) causes a marked catecholamine release. Subsequent exposure of the glands to lanthanum (0.5 mM) causes very little catecholamine release but does inhibit the response to acetylcholine by 74% and the response to potassium by 44%. Calcium mobilization by lanthanum probably explains the release upon the initial exposure of adrenals to lanthanum. Inhibition of calcium entry into the medullary cells by lanthanum may explain the inhibition of acetylcholine-induced or potassium-induced catecholamine release.
