To explore gift-giving throughout history is to examine the interplay between those who give and those who receive, the main facet of which is the expression of a symbolic alliance between the two parties. The different possible aims, contexts, and discursive interpretations that shape this practice complicate its study and analysis. The multidimensionality of the gift, as well as its fundamental role as a factor in regulating human relationships, has been—and continues to be—the focus of renewed scholarly attention and of prolific debates in the social and human sciences since the publication of Marcel Mauss's influential'Essai sur le don'¹
