Physiologically active dosages of ethylene are demonstrated by gas chromatography to be present in mangoes and bananas before the onset of the respiratory climacteric. In 17 species of fruits the internal ethylene concentration is related to the rate of ethylene production by a fairly constant factor, which is used in conjunction with known patterns of ethylene production to indicate that stimulatory dosages of ethylene exist in a variety of pre-climacteric fruit. The response of mangoes to ethylene is related to the log of the applied concentration, is demonstrable in fruits which have passed their preclimacteric minimum, and appears within 15 mins. after treatment is started. Ethylene production is shown to occur in several fruits which previously had been reported devoid of the gas, and it is concluded that ethylene acts as a ripening hormone.
