To clarify the validity of the temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) technique for theanalysis of noncatalytic gas-solid reactions, two coal chars were gasified by air between 350 and 550 C. The rate parameters were determined by three models: a volumetric reaction model, a grain model, and the random pore model proposed by Bhatia and Perlmutter. Large differences were found among the rate parameters estimated by the three models. It appearsnecessary to employ at least three different heating rates in TPR runs to obtain reasonable parameters and accurate activation energies. The model used also has an important role if reasonable rate parameters are to be obtained.
