In view of the pseudogap in underdoped cuprate superconductors, we study the stability of a staggered flux state SF against the conventional metallic state as the normal state which underlies the d-wave superconductivity, using a variational Monte Carlo method. We focus on the effect of diagonal hopping term (t 0 ) in the square-lattice Hubbard model on the stability of SF. The results are
