The unique shape-dependent plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles which covers a wide range of the visible spectrum, was reported. Nanoparticle extinction has both light absorption and scattering components which are size-and shape-dependent, and may have the same wavelength dependence. In addition to tunable plasmon resonance from nanoparticles of different shapes, the observed light scattering was also highly dependent on the orientation of anistropic nanorods. Nanorod orientation was realized from different colors of Rayleigh scattering observed using polarized incident radiation in a transmission microscope. The results show that gold nanoparticles are useful as near-filed optical microscopy resources and in biological labeling.
