Titanium was deposited electrolytically from fused alkali chlorides by means of a contact cathode operating in an atmosphere of titanium tetrachloride and hydrogen. Owing to the heavy current used, the temperature of the cathode hot spot rose to about 1300°C while the graphite cell remained at a low temperature. Reduction of titanium tetrachloride and deposition of sintered metal took place simultaneously at the single cathode.
