In many European cities, urban wastelands are often the only large areas where the undisturbed development of wilderness is possible over several years. Under the conditions of shrinking cities, opportunities are arising to incorporate urban wastelands into the green structures of cities. Wastelands are particularly interesting for urban green systems because with their various stages of vegetation they are able to provide a broad habitat mosaic and, with this, opportunities to increase biodiversity. But how is wilderness and new biodiversity on urban wastelands perceived and accepted by residents? Which visions and concepts are suitable for urban biodiversity? Is it better to design wastelands or leave them to natural succession? Do they need to be protected or will their (spontaneous) use prove to be an interesting solution? Is habitat management necessary and to what extent do creative changes make sense?
