Control of the wall thicknesses of supramolecular organic nanotubes is important in terms of the hierarchy, dispersibility, and surface areas. We have succeeded in the selective preparation of single-walled asymmetrical nanotube by the coordination/dissociation of Pt(II) complexes with a carboxylic-bearing bolaamphiphile. Conventional pH-adjustment of the bolaamphiphile yields multiple-walled nanotube. Interestingly, the coordination of cisplatin or transplatin with the bolaamphiphile demonstrate acis–transeffect in intermediate assemblies, removal of the Pt(II) yields the same single-walled asymmetrical nanotubes. Further, the endo-coordinated cisplatin-nanotube can serve as a soft template for platinum nanoparticles.
