“Subjective accentuation” takes place when a subject hears accents in the absence of corresponding periodic changes in the stimulus. For example, when a series of identical, evenly spaced tones is played (such a series will be called simply a “series” in this article), subjects often report that they hear accents on some of the tones. Usually such accents are periodic.“Personal tempo” is the mean rate at which a person repeats a simple motion. It has generally been found that when a number of individuals on a number of occasions repeat a given motion at any rate they choose, intraindividual variation in rate is significantly less than interindividual variation (3, 14), so that there is justification for regarding the mean rate for an individual as a personal attribute. In this study “personal tempo” is exemplified by the rate chosen by a subject when he is instructed to tap evenly with the finger or hand.
