The continuing progress in the understanding of hemoglobin structure and function depends, in part, on advances in methodology. Zone electrophoresis has been the primary tool for the separation and analysis of hemoglobins and the detection of new variants. Recently, isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel has been applied to the study of hemoglobins.1-8 This paper will describe some of the advantages as well as limitations of this method in the separation and identification of human hemoglobins.
