It is known that 2-oxazoline derivatives, containing an iminoether group in the ring, react with carboxylic acids'), thiols2), hydrogen halides3), epoxides4), and isocyanates'). Polymers have been prepared by cationic polymerization of 2-oxazolines6-"), by radical polymerization of 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline''9 12), and by polyaddition reactions of bis-2-oxazolines with dicarboxylic acids13) and with dithiols"). Although 2-oxazolinyl groups are useful functional groups, no reactions of pendant 2-oxazolinyl groups in a polymer chain have so far been reported except for the reaction with a carboxylic acid").
