Since MIY0sHI (1) revealed the decomposition of paraffine by Botrytis cinera in 1895, a number of investigations on microbial utilization of hydrocarbons have been reported. Microorganisms utilizing hydrocarbons are found in taxa of bacteria, yeasts, molds and actinomycetes, and numerous names of species are presented in the references (2, 3, 4 , 5). Moreover, it is well-known that hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria have an influence on petroleum industry with respect to prospecting, production, refinery etc. (5, 6). However, detailed taxonomical investigations have remained obscure. In this paper we describe the results of determinative studies on liquid paraffine-utilizing bacteria isolated from oil-brines and the other related materials collected during 1956 from oil fields in Japan. The bacterial utilization of gaseous hydrocarbons will be reported elsewhere.
