In this the third memoir of the series we turn our attention to the following problems concerning the distribution of the numbers s that are expressible s the sum of two squares: — (i) the determination of the actual order of magnitude of the number of such integers s that lie in the interval between x and x + A, where h may be small compared with x: (u) the determination of the actual order of magnitude of the number of pairs of such integers s1? s2 not exceeding x that differ by a given positive constant k.
