There has been remarkable progressin recent years in our understanding of the physiology of antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin), from its synthesis and release in the central nervous system to its action on the renal tubular cell. Several recent reviews [1–5] have considered the physiology of antidiuretic hormone in detail, and only a brief summary will be given of the steps leading to the permeability response of the collecting duct. The question to be emphasized in this article is the following: how does vasopressin increase the rate of osmotic water flow across the cell membrane?
