Hair cells, the primary receptors of the auditory and vestibular organs, are neuroepithelial cells characterized by apical hair bundles composed of a single true cilium-the kinocilium-and a large number of actin-filled stereocilia.’J These specialized cells are highly susceptible to damage by noise, infections, and ototoxic dr~ gs.~-~ Until recently, it was generally accepted that hair cells in mammals could only be produced during embryonic development and that, once lost in mature animals, were gone forever (but see refs. 6-8). Many studies have shown, however, that the vestibular organs of amphibians, fish, and birds continue to produce new hair cells at a low level throughout adult Moreover, the amphibian vestibular organs, like those in birdsl3-l7 and fish, ls retain the capacity to rapidly regenerate new hair cells following the elimination of existing hair cells by gentamicin ototo~ icity.’~
