The sensitivity of 89Actinomycesstrains [85 of the 86 clinical isolates wereA. israelii] to benzylpenicillin and amoxycillin has been testedin vitro.Minimal inhibitory concentration values for benzylpenicillin varied from 0.05 to 6.0 µg/ml whilst those for amoxycillin did not exceed 0.8 µg/ml for any isolates. Ten patients with actinomycosis were treated by a combination of surgery and oral amoxycillin 500 mg four times daily and responsed well, clinical resolutions being achieved in all cases in less than six weeks. On the basis of these results, a combination of oral amoxycillin and surgery would be appropriate for cases of oral or cervicofacial actinomycosis.newline˜ASADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:The sensitivity of 89Actinomycesisolates, including 86 (85A. israelii,1A. viscosus) from clinical cases and 3 (A. israelii, A. viscosus, A. naeslundii) from type culture collections, to benzylpenicillin and amoxycillin was tested. The min. inhibitory concn for benzylpenicillin was 0.05-6 µg/ml while that for amoxycillin did not exceed 0.8 µg/ml. Ten patients with extra-oral infection were treated with a combination of surgery and oral amoxycillin at 500 mg 4 times/day. Clinical resolution was achieved in all cases in less than 6 weeks.
