Following the Seoul Symposium of the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology: Regulation of aging and carcinogenesis J Cancer Res Clin Oncol 126: 418±423, 2000), the fourth Joint Symposium between our two nations was held in Japan for the first time. After the third Symposium in Seoul, we discussed the possibility of extending our world by inviting scientists from different fields of cancer research. Subsequently, the Symposium±arranged by three Korean and four Japanese organizers, and held on 8 February to 10 February, 2001 in Omiya, Saitama±featured twenty-seven oral presentations on six themes±cancer prevention, human carcinogenesis and aging, chemical and viral carcinogenesis, molecular epidemiology and clinical study, and new biomarkers±given by scientists from 17 institutions six Korean and 11 Japanese), along with nineteen poster presentations by young scientists and students: more than 100 people took part during the 2 days. As we noted in the aims written in our abstract, young students and scientists were encouraged to present their results in posters, along with short talks and discussions in a friendly environment. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Hirota Fujiki and Dr. Sang Chul Park. Dr. Fujiki stressed the particular theme of the fourth Symposium``Investigation on the balanced cooperation of cancer cells with the human body'', which was the presentation of Prof. Tomizo Yoshida. Since we are looking toward the ultimate goal of cancer chemoprevention, this phrase takes on significance even at present. When Prof. Yoshida was at Nagasaki University, he and Dr. Chang Keun Kim, formerly President of Korea Cancer Association, worked together and discovered the``Yoshida Sarcoma''. We chose his phrase for the title of this Symposium to commemorate two of the great scientists of our two nations. Dr. Park, as one of the Korean organizers, stated the original purpose of the establishment of our Joint Symposium and development of the Symposia in the past, held in Kang-nung, Cheju, and Seoul. Talking about the great success of the International Symposium on Gerontology, organized by him in 2000, Dr. Park referred to a unique social custom in Okinawa called``Yuimahru'': when an elderly person in Okinawa gets up in the morning, he first opens the window of the house; this opened window is a sign that the person is alive and well. Dr. Park said that this Joint Symposium is just like opening windows for young scientists in both nations.
