The infrared spectrum of PCI3 adsorbed on silica has been studied by Bogatyrev and Chuiko,* 1 who observed the appearance of two broad IR bands due to perturbed isolated surface silanols near 3650 and 3500 cm-1. Although no specific attribution was specified for either band, they assumed that two different structures could result from the interaction between physically adsorbed PCI3 and SiOH.An additionalIR band was reported at 605 cm-1 which was attributed to the antisymmetric PCI stretching mode of PCI3 coordinated to SiOH. However, for pure PCI3 the antisymmetric and symmetric PCI3 stretching modes2 lie between 515 and 487 cm-1, and such a large high-wave-number shift would not be expected for any molecular complex. 3
