In sharing the tasks between the two presenters of papers(b) it was agreed that I have to discuss the significance of symptom complexes in their relation to forms of illness on the one hand and to basic symptoms on the other. To put it another way, my task could be said to deal with the present position as regards our present efforts at classification. The history of psychiatry represents an especial chapter in the history of medicine. In the course of rapid development its decisive phases have been compressed into a few decades and our discipline bears the traces of these aspects of its past clearly enough. Over a long period the best workers were preoccupied with the problems facing the speciality and how to overcome them. It was a battle on several fronts, or to use a metaphor, like the situation of the Jews building the temple in Jerusalem, wielding a trowel in one hand while fighting off their enemies with the other. Now that much has outwardly improved and the discipline as a whole has seemingly achieved some degree of consolidation, there has begun to be some close consideration of the basic tenets of our science, of the possibilities of recognition and of future prospects and goals a most vigorous attempt to deal from every possible angle with the mass of experience to which we temporarily apply the collective term mental illnesses. In no way was this an even development. Viewed retrospectively, it came about in fits and starts due partly to some brilliant individual thinkers whose stimulus had a leavening effect, and partly to the natural impetus of events. For
