The lower jaws and jaw musculature of a series of therapsids and early mammals are compared. It is shown how changes in the structure of tne lower jaw and insertions of the jaw muscles progressively reduced the forces to which the jaw joint was subjected during biting. These changes made it possible for the bones forming the reptilian jaw joint (quadrate and articular) and other accessory jaw bones to decrease in size while the dentary increased in size.
