Microbial oxidation of iron pyrite by microorganisms in acid leacih water at Bingham Canyon, Utah, was demonstrated by Bryner et al. (1954). Further studies showed that the leaching water contains a ferrous-iron-oxidizing, strongly acidophilic bacterium (King, 1956; Bryner and Jameson, 1958) which is similar to the organisms described by Colmer et al. (1950) and by Leathen et al. (1956).
