The Sea of Okhotsk was formed in Miocene time at the site of the Late Cretaceous volcanic arc and marginal basin of this region. Two volcanic arcs existed in the Miocene: the Kuril and the Sakhalin. No less than 200 km of oceanic crust have been subducted under the Sakhalin arc in the western part of the Sea of Okhotsk. Considerable parts of the Sea of Okhotsk, corresponding to the Academy of Science and Institute of Oceanology rises, subsided about 1000 m during the subduction process and their sedimentary cover experienced folding, which continues to the present time. At the same time there occurred the opening of the Kuril Basin behind the Kuril arc. At present, the Sea of Okhotsk is a region of the junction between four lithosphere plates: the Pacific, North American, Eurasian and Amurian. The Sea of Okhotsk microplate is located between them and its interaction with these plates has produced the present pattern of features in the region.
