T here is a concordance of structure and function in oral mucosa. This is demonstrated continuously during normal function as the oral mucosa is altered when loaded or mechanically stressed. In a mechanical sense, the oral mucosa is a viscoelastic material that demonstrates distinct time-dependent properties on loading. There are two broad classes of oral mucosa:(1) masticatory mucosa, which is firm and offers distinct resistance to deformation under applied load and (2) lining mucosa, which is highly distensible and easily deformed under applied load. The histology of this tissue will be superficially reviewed since a comprehensive study can be found in many textbooks.
