The piece discusses the origin of the free clinic and introduces the articles about it in the March 1974 issue of the periodical," Journal of Social Issues". At present time, there exist two kinds of free clinics, one kind has been founded by a combination of medical, psychological and social service personnel and the other by inhabitants of a specific community who find that they are in need of medical care. The initial problems that face individuals who seek to start a free clinic are manifold, ranging from the practical problems of where is the clinic to be situated, to the more abstract issue of what are the philosophies and goals of a free clinic. This issue of the journal deals with various aspects of free clinic and its implication on public health and medical care.
