Porous scaffolds comprising natural polymers and bioceramic particles have recently been used in tissue engineering. Collagen is one such natural polymer providing favorable biological conditions; for example, it stimulates the generation and differentiation of cells as an extracellular matrix. alpha-Tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) have also been widely used in bone tissue engineering owing to their favorable osteoconductivity, cellular adhesion, accelerated differentiation, and mechanical properties. In the present study, collagen scaffolds with different bioceramic particles were successfully fabricated by varying the ratio of alpha-TCP and beta-TCP particles. Our results indicate that material properties, such as compressive modulus, swelling behavior, and porosity, can be controlled by varying the ratio of alpha-TCP and beta-TCP particles.
