In 1985, Mrs. Joyce Ovenden of Barnet, a suburb of London, brought several documents that had long been in the possession of her family into the British Library for identification. Concealed and virtually invisible among them were two fragile, worn and much faded fragments of a fourteenth-century English world map. Modern methods of conservation, the use of ultraviolet light and above all ultraviolet photography have revealed them to be items of major importance for the history of English and European medieval cartography.'
