A statistical study of fungi-form and foliate papillae on the tongues of approx. 100 rats of different ages showed an average of 178.8 for the former and 12 for the latter. The fungiform type varied from 114 to 221 and the foliate type ranged from 8 to 15/ tongue. These papilla counts may give a numerical measure of genetic differences. The epithelium is typical in structure but varies in thickness over the filiform and fungi-form papillae to affect a nearly uniform level for the general surface of the tongue. It differentiates as a corni-fied spine above each filiform papilla and forms a single taste bud on top of each fungiform papilla. Large numbers of taste buds appear in the walls of the foliate and circum-vallate papillae. The single circumvallate papilla is atypical in character being elongated in the midaxis of the tongue and surrounded on only 3 sides by a trench. Its broader anterior portion rises slightly above the tongue''s surface while posteriorly it narrows and is overlapped by the back wall of the trench. After immersion of the tongue in Seiler''s macerating soln. the entire epithelium can be removed in one piece. The denuded dermis reveals striking anatomical features of the various papillae.
