(Figure Presented) The heat is on: Thermal ionization of a variety of organic salts including ionic liquids and transition-metal salts occurs at atmospheric pressure. This thermal method allows for the study of ion-molecule reactions; for example, the fast selective desorption and derivatization of D-lysine occurs when thermally generated pyrylium ions react with solid lysine under ambient conditions (see picture).
