Abstract. We report on automated pulse compression of regeneratively amplified femtosecond laser pulses. By employing a feedback-controlled evolutionary algorithm in combination with a femtosecond pulse shaper which is based on a liquid crystal display spatial light modulator, complex phase-modulated laser pulses are optimized, resulting in bandwidth-limited amplified laser pulses. The results obtained are checked in detail by FROG analysis.
