The interaction of nature and nurt ure is one of the central problems of genetics. We can only determine the differences between two different genotypes by putting each of them into a number of different environments. We compare two pure lines of mice not only as regards colour, hair form, and other characters which are little affected by nurture, but for such characters as resistance to different bacterial and virus infections, each of which must be tested by appropriate changes of environment. We may require a wheat to be resistant to each of a number of unfavourable conditions, such as drought, frost, and attacks by several different varieties of rust. The line must be exposed to each of these separately.
