Not only does [the Selden map] radically re-represent China’s place in the world by foregrounding trade rather than the state. It also reverses the usual procedure, which is to start with the boundaries between land andwater and then fill in the details. Instead, the Selden cartographer has built up hismap from one set of details in particular, the routes that Chinese maritime traders were sailing into the South China Sea and beyond. Around that network of trade, he assembled a new portrait of the world.
