Heating of siliceous rocks to alter their flaking properties is extensively documented in the ethnographic, experimental and archaeological literature of the Americas (see Appendix). within Australia, however, reports are limited. Heat treatment has been described in the contact period only in the Kimberleys (Akerman 1979, with refs: 144-9), although it has been recently noted in central Australia (J. O'Connell, pers. comm.). There has been some speculation as to its use in prehistoric times (D. Witter, pers. comm.) but no demonstration of it. This paper briefly describes heat treatment and its effects, reports evidence of its presence in prehistoric Australian and Tasmanian stone artefacts, and notes some implications of its use.
