The fourth edition of Sternberg’s Diagnostic Surgical Pathology continues to be one of the classic texts of surgical pathology. The title of the fourth edition was modified from Diagnostic Surgical Pathology to Sternberg’s Diagnostic Surgical Pathology to reflect contributions of founding editor Stephen S. Sternberg. Although the organization of the two volumes is similar to the previous editions with 10 sections encompassing 58 chapters, the authors revised the text, tables, and references to reflect advances that have occurred over the 5 years since the previous edition. The fourth edition has been substantially updated to reflect new molecular and immunohistochemical markers for diagnoses, revised classification schemes, and recently described entities.Updated tables of nonrandom chromosomal abnormalities and molecular biology of soft tissue tumors, neuroblastoma, and other small round blue cell tumors complement the text. A discussion of the RET gene rearrangement in thyroid tumors provides practical insight into this exciting area in thyroid pathology. The bone marrow and lymph node chapters have significantly updated tables and discussions of diagnostic and prognostic molecular genetic abnormalities.
