The application of the allosteric model of Monod, Wyman and Changeux (1965) to the receptor for acetylcholine results in a description which accounts for observed slopes of the Hill plot of the response greater than 1, for recently observed changes in this slope after treatment of the responding cells with certain reagents, for activators with different intrinsic activities, and which provides cirteria for differentiating allosteric and competitive inhibitors.
