BACKGROUNDBroadly speaking, sinusitis may be clinically defined as the condition manifested by an inflammatory response involving the following: the mucous membranes (possibly including the neuroepithelium) of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, fluids within these cavities, and/or underlying bone. The fluids within these cavities are dynamic and are related to dynamic pathologic changes in the bone and soft tissues of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Symptoms associated with sinusitis include nasal obstruction, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, nasal purulence, postnasal drip, facial pressure and pain, alteration in the sense of smell, cough not due to asthma, fever, halitosis, fatigue, dental pain, pharyngitis, otologic symptoms (eg, ear fullness and clicking), and headache. Although most physicians and researchers agree broadly on such a definition for sinusitis, the precise basis for the clinical diagnosis of sinusitis is more difficult to define.
