In a cross-sectional study, 5 women donated milk for 12, 13 to 15 or 16 to 24 months of lactation. One specimen was collected from each woman by emptying a breast of milk with a low pressure electric pump. Viable leucocytes were identified by trypan blue exclusion. Lactoferrin and lysozyme were estimated by electroimmunodiffusion; total and secretory immunoglobulin (Ig)A were estimated by fluorescent immunosorbence. Secretory IgA antibodies to a pool ofEscherichia colisomatic antigens were estimated by enzyme-linked immunosorbence. No leucocyte was detected in any specimen. The concentrations of total and secretory IgA, lactoferrin and lysozyme were similar to those found in the last 6 months of uninterrupted lactation and during gradual weaning at 6 to 9 months of lactation. The findings also indicate that IgA antibodies toE. coliare produced during the second year of lactation. That suggests that the enteromammary lymphocyte traffic pathway (Peyer's patches→mesenteric lymph nodes→thoracid duct→blood→mammary gland), which leads to the development of lymphoid cells in the mammary gland which produce IgA antibodies to enteric microorganisms, operates throughout lactation.
